Use this when

Questions this estimate can answer

  • You are comparing a 2025 or 2026 federal income scenario.
  • You want a bracket-by-bracket planning estimate before withholding or quarterly decisions.
  • You need a transparent standard-deduction versus itemized-deduction comparison.
Not for

Checks you still need to make

  • A filed return, exact withholding form or a final payment amount.
  • State/local tax, complex credits, phaseouts or special income categories.
  • A tax year not shown in the calculator's year selector.
How it works

Federal tax, refund, or amount owed

Formula

Projected refund or amount owed = federal withholding + estimated payments − estimated federal tax after deductions and credits.

Choose the year and filing status, enter gross income and federal withholding, then add adjustments, deductions, credits or estimated payments only when they apply. The standard deduction is filled automatically unless your entered itemized amount is higher.

A positive payment difference is shown as a projected refund; a negative difference is shown as a projected amount owed. The result is a planning estimate, not a completed tax return.

Assumptions and limits

  • US resident individual
  • Ordinary income only
  • No age/blindness addition to the standard deduction
  • Credits entered as a simple dollar reduction
Worked example

Single filer with $85,000 gross income in 2026

  1. $85,000 gross income − $3,000 eligible adjustments = $82,000 AGI.
  2. $82,000 AGI − $16,100 standard deduction = $65,900 taxable income.
  3. Apply 10% to the first $12,400, 12% through $50,400, and 22% to the remaining $15,500, then compare the tax with federal withholding and estimated payments.

Result: $9,210 estimated federal income tax. If $10,500 was withheld and no estimated payments were made, the planning difference is a $1,290 refund before items outside this simplified model.

Error check

Common mistakes that change the result

  • Entering gross pay where the calculator requests taxable income or AGI.
  • Applying the marginal bracket rate to all income.
  • Subtracting both the standard deduction and itemized deductions.
  • Entering Social Security and Medicare withholding as federal income-tax withholding.

Frequently asked questions

Does moving into a higher bracket tax all my income at that rate?

No. Federal brackets are marginal: only the layer of taxable income inside the higher bracket receives the higher rate.

Why can this differ from my filed refund?

The calculator now compares estimated tax with entered withholding and payments, but a filed return can include refundable credits, payroll corrections, other taxes, phaseouts and income categories that are not modeled here.

Are 2026 brackets included?

Yes. The 2026 schedules and standard deductions use IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 as modified after the 2025 federal tax law changes.
