How it works

Add or remove sales tax

Formula

Add: tax = price × rate; total = price + tax. Remove: pre-tax price = tax-inclusive total ÷ (1 + rate).

Choose the state and TaxMathKit inserts its population-weighted 2026 average combined state-and-local rate. You can optionally replace it with an address-level rate from a receipt or official lookup.

The default is a planning estimate because local districts, product exemptions, tax holidays and sourcing rules can change the exact rate.

Assumptions and limits

  • 2026 state-average combined planning rate unless overridden
  • The full entered amount is taxable
  • No product exemption or tax holiday
  • Standard rounding to cents
Worked example

$125 taxable price at an 8.25% combined rate

  1. Convert 8.25% to decimal form: 0.0825.
  2. Sales tax: $125 × 0.0825 = $10.3125, then apply the jurisdiction's required rounding method.
  3. With ordinary cent rounding for this illustration: $125 + $10.31 = $135.31.

Result: $10.31 illustrative sales tax and $135.31 total. Verify the address, product taxability, sourcing, date, and rounding rule before collection or filing.

Error check

Common mistakes that change the result

  • Using a statewide headline rate when local district rates also apply.
  • Treating a ZIP code as a precise tax boundary.
  • Applying the rate to exempt items or excluding taxable charges without authority.
  • Rounding inconsistently between line items, invoices, and filed returns.
Planning estimate, not tax advice

Tax law depends on facts this tool cannot collect. Do not use the result as the sole basis for filing, withholding or payment decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a ZIP code alone for an exact rate?

Not reliably. Tax boundaries can differ inside a ZIP code. For filing or collection, use an official address-level source.

How do I remove tax from a total?

Switch this calculator to Remove included tax. It divides the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the combined rate and shows both the original price and included tax.
